Last Night I Saw You Smiling (2019)

dir. Kavich Neang

A towering apartment building, once majestic, now faces its final days. In rooms of chipped paint and abandoned debris, a lone voice sings in Khmer: “My beating, loving heart, swore we’d never part”. The White Building in Phnom Penh once stood as a testament to the artistic resurgence that followed the Khmer Rouge. Neang documents the journeys of three families, including his own, as they pack their belongings, share memories, and confront the uncertainty of what comes next. With calm, fixed frames, Neang turns his camera toward reality, capturing final intimate gestures of departure before the demolition crews move in.
