Sound of Falling dives into the lives of four girls who live in a farmhouse in northern Germany at different points over the course of a century. Between moments of solitary absorption in their surroundings, each girl also navigates bursts of cruelty and violence, usually inflicted by men who impose their rules on the farmhouse’s inhabitants. Through stream of consciousness, we accompany each girl through their journey as they seek to satisfy their curiosity about others and their own identities, while also navigating the attempts at control by the adults around them. Wandering between past and future until they seem to merge, the film immerses us in these girls’ perspectives as they experience their world.
