A crew of misfits chafe against an oppressive school environment in this empathetic portrait of youthful defiance.
At an elite all-girls school, new student Choo Xin Yu forges a close bond with three classmates who share her rebellious spirit. Their band of outsiders mimic the rituals of street gangsters, yearning for freedom from Singapore’s rigid social expectations. But authority figures attempt to suppress even these innocent shenanigans, while powerful modes of social conditioning permeate the most intimate friendships.
As the next stage of life beckons, differences in class privilege and personal ambition come into sharper focus, and loyalties are tested. Amoeba centres the anguish and ambivalence of adolescence amidst a culture that demands absolute discipline and conformity.
