When Sanae’s beloved is taken by the eerie entity known only as “Mag Mag,” she attempts to take revenge. However, the object of her vendetta starts to shift over the course of her journey. The film gradually transforms into a genre experiment that pays homage to the lineage of Japanese film and television. Drawing on the traditions of horror classics, the elaborate production designs of reality shows, the romantic tropes of early J-drama, as well as her own experiences, Retriever reshapes these influences into something distinct and new. The result is a darkly humourous debut that twists obsession into a love story at once unpredictable, haunting and human in its exploration of the universal desire for love.
